| About Pete! (Or 'Life begins at 40')Hi, life really started for me on February 4th 2005 when I had a life-saving heart transplant at Papworth hospital in Cambridge, Great Britain. I was diagnosed with an inherited heart condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (see www.cardiomyopathy.org) in 1999 and was, until last year, pretty much unaffected by the illness. All that changed during 2004 when I became very ill very rapidly. Soon I was barely able to climb the stairs or get out of bed: I was suffering from chronic heart failure, making me breathless and tired - I was wasting away. I spent most of this time in hospital. For my wife, two young children and my family this was a very difficult time. Not too easy for me either! I was dying. Every time I said goodbye to my loved ones, I never knew if I would see them again.
Just before Christmas 2004 I was told that I would need a heart transplant. By then I was so ill that I welcomed the news. The next critical step was when I was sent to Papworth Hospital for a battery of tests to assess whether I was fit enough for a transplant. Some patients with heart failure can already be too ill to have a transplant, or their organs are already too damaged for them to survive transplantation. For these poor people, there is no hope.
So you can imagine my relief when, after 3 days, I was told that yes, I was an ideal candidate for a heart transplant, and that I would immediately go on the waiting list. I never thought I would be so pleased to be told I was going to have a heart transplant :-).
Then there came the wait for a suitable donor heart to become availble. Due to the shortage of donors, many patients die waiting. After one false alarm when I was called in to Papworth for a transplant only to be told that the organ was not suitable, a suitable donor heart was found after a wait of just two weeks. Mercifully brief, it was still the longest two weeks of my life!
Within 3 weeks of the transplant I was back home with my family. The transplant itself was relatively painless. Unless I laughed, coughed or moved ;-). On my first day home I was able to go for a walk with my family and my dog in the New Forest. I was already on the road to recovery.
As I write this it is now a year since my transplant, life still feels fresh and new. I feel great, and am fitter than I have been for years. I am SO lucky. Every year hundreds of people die while waiting for transplants. There is a chronic shortage of organ donors in the United Kingdom. For the unlucky ones, life is one long goodbye. For the lucky ones, some immensely kind person who they will never know has saved their life. I can never adequately thank my donor, or their families who gave their consent at such a difficult time. To receive this Gift of Life is a deeply humbling experience that truely reawakens your appreciation of what 'humanity' means.
Please consider registering as an organ donor. Help others to live after their death by joining the NHS Organ Donor Register. Visit http://www.uktransplant.co.uk.
From me, my young children (who now have their Daddy back home), my family and all the others who have received the Gift of Life, "Thank you".

Why Yo-yos?Postscript: Why yo-yos? Well, in the first few weeks post-tranplant I was limited in what I could do. A yo-yo on sale on Amazon caught my eye: I had never owned a 'proper' one and I was soon hooked! I purchased a few more yo-yos and realised that we Europeans pay too much to have fun! I had always wanted to start my own business and wondered about selling yo-yos and other skill toys at more affordable prices. A few months after my transplant I decided to make this a reality and started my new business venture, LetsHaveFun.biz. I opened my eBay shop and you know what? It is just so much fun! I love being my own boss and enjoy communicating with my customers from around the world.
Post transplant I am determined to enjoy life more. This is why I want to fill my shop with fun things like boomerangs, frisbees, yoyos, diabolos, toys, gadgets... anything that put a smile on my face and I hope will put a smile on your face too :-)
To my existing customers - thanks for shopping!
To my new customers - welcome to Lets Have Fun!
To everyone who has received an organ donor card, unsolicited, with their order - I hope you didn't mind!
